Chief Executive Officer
Dr. James Stevenson served as both a professor and chair of West Virginia School of Medicine’s Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry for 35 years. He was involved early with managed care models and during this time partnered with The
Health Plan of WV and later with Geisinger Clinics. Dr. Stevenson was active on several task forces that focused on a health care delivery system organized to manage cost, utilization, and quality. With that goal in mind, he initiated a model for residency programs, sponsored residents and oversaw two large hospital facilities resulting between 50-60 thousand outpatient visits per year. Additionally, WVU developed a contract with the state of Pennsylvania to offer in-house mental health services to five state prisons. This mixed model consisted of telemedicine visits and a one day per month MD onsite visit. During a 2-year tenure as State Medical Director for Behavioral Health, he was able to accomplish the framework for the current Tele-psych program. WVU sponsors visits at about 15 sites in rural WV. When Dr. Stevenson retired, WVU was averaging nearly 6,000 visits per year.
